My Music Magazine Initial Ideas

Magazine Title

Working titles for my music magazine include:

  • 420 - 420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) refers to consumption of Cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis drug subculture. I scrapped this idea because it is more linked with the Rastafarian culture rather than reggae music.

  • Palm Sounds - This title is the one i will most probably use. The 'Palm' references the beaches of Caribbean where reggae music is most popular. The 'Sounds' references the fact that it is a music magazine.

Target Audience

Demographics

The main aspects of my target audience are:
  • Male - The majority of reggae listeners are male and therefore it makes sense to target them.
  • Between the ages of 18 and 40 - This is the most likely age range to buy a magazine.
  • Rastafarian - The majority of reggae listeners follow the Rastafari faith, but those who aren't will still understand the references.
Psychographics
  • Laid Back - Reggae music is often very relaxing, therefor the sort of person to listen to it would be some
  • Occasional cannibis user - Reggae is closely linked with the Rastafari culture, as is Cannabis usage.
Price/Release
The price would likely be around the £4.50 mark. A reggae magazine is a very niche area in the market, and therefor wouldnt be incredibly popular, so by releasing it monthly, at a slightly higher price, it becomes finacially viable.

Content
The main content of the magazine would be reviews of gigs and albums, interviews with artists and band, and general news from the reggae world.

Style
The magazine would have a fairly informal style. Being a relaxed genre, the mode of address would me jokey, and most probably in 2nd person, therefor talking directly to the audience.
